Southampton dismissed Pellegrino after the 46-year-old managed just one win in 17 Premier League games.

The club announced via a press release tonight that Pellegrino, hired this past June on a three year deal as the successor to Claude Puel, is already out of a job.

The club also conirmed that Pellegrino's backroom staff would be following the Argentinian through the exit door.

Assistant coaches Carlos Compagnucci and Xavier Tamarit have also left the club.

Southampton are now one point above the relegation zone and next face West Ham away in the English top flight. With eight games remaining they have just 28 points.

"We would like to place on record our thanks to Mauricio, Carlos and Xavier for their efforts during their time with Southampton, and wish them well for the future", read a club statement on Monday evening.

The club were concerned that they were sleepwalking towards the drop after a dismal run of one win in 17 league games that leaves them a place and a point above the relegation zone.

The straw that broke the camels back proved to come on Saturday with the heavy3-0 defeat toNewcastle United on Saturday, with it now being unknown who will take charge of the FA Cup quarter-final with Wigan Athletic ahead of the worldwide break. The south-coast club made a decision to act two days after a 3-0 loss at Newcastle, after which Pellegrino said some of his players "gave up".

"Sometimes you can play badly", the Argentine admitted. "Sometimes you can make mistakes but you have to react." .

Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier, meanwhile, said in reply to a fan calling for him to take the reigns: "With all my coaching experience i think not!"
