In audio of the incident obtained by LiveATC.net, the pilot of the aircraft can be heard requesting to issue a mayday from the LaGuardia Air Traffic Control due to an engine failure moments before the helicopter went down into the East River, just north of Roosevelt Island.

Three of the five passengers were listed as critical upon arriving at a nearby hospital, while two others were declared dead at the crash scene.

The pilot freed himself and was rescued and later was treated and released in good condition from a hospital, police said.

A deadly helicopter crash in NY may have been caused by a passenger's bag, police have reported. "Screaming help and waving his arms like this", said Brianna Jesme and Celia Skvaril who witnessed the crash.

In a radio call to LaGuardia Airport, the pilot said the chopper was experiencing an engine failure. The temperature of the East River was around 4 degrees Celsius.

Emergency divers had to get the passengers out of tight safety harnesses while they were upside down, Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said.

At least two of the passengers were dead when rescue divers got to the scene, officials said. "We don't have a great deal to report yet, but will provide regular updates".

The National Transportation Safety Board is now investigating what caused the tragic accident, with the red helicopter's crash into the water captured on film and uploaded to Twitter.

It's unclear exactly what caused the crash at this time. Witnesses said the helicopter was flying noisily before dropping to the river. The pilot quickly surfaced, however, clinging to a flotation device as a tugboat and then police boats approached. The helicopter is now in police possession.
