NCAA snubs USC, Notre Dame highlight NIT field

Notre Dame improves to 24-9-2 on the year while the Nittany Lions fall to 18-14-5 overall.

The 32-team tournament is played at the home court of the higher-seeded team in each of the first three rounds. The teams are meeting for the 93rd time overall and the first time in State College since the 2008-09 season. "I'm proud of what our team has accomplished this season".

"We are excited to be in this year's 2018 NIT field", Temple coach Fran Dunphy said in a conference call with reporters.

Penn State will not be repeating as Big Ten champions in men's hockey. The two assists also tie him with junior Andrew Sturtz (Buffalo, N.Y.) for third all-time at Penn State and his 58 career points are now just two shy of Luke Juha '16 for the most all-time by a Nittany Lion defenseman.

USC will play UNC Asheville on Tuesday night in its first appearance in the NIT since 1999.

A couple of noteworthy NCAA Tournament snubs helped create quite a field for the NIT.

The NIT first-round contest will air on ESPNU, the Penn State Sports Network and Among the notable omissions from the tournament included Middle Tennessee, USC, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, Louisville, Marquette and Oklahoma State.

Should Notre Dame continue to earn victories in the tournament, they would host the second round (March 16 -19) and quarterfinals (March 20 & 21) at Purcell Pavilion before heading to Madison Square Garden for the semifinals (March 27) and final (March 29).

Led by Coach Fran Dunphy, Temple was 8-10 in the American Athletic Conference and the No. 7 in the AAC Tournament.

Ticket information for Wednesday's NIT first round game has been distributed to season ticket holders and will be posted on and on Penn State Athletics' social media channels.
