Officials said that the chief minister will hold a meeting with Trudeau at a hotel in Amritsar after Trudeau pays obeisance at the Golden Temple. India also accused other Sikhs in Mr Trudeau's cabinet of similar leanings.

The agriculture issue is another bilateral irritant, as India slapped import tariffs of 50 per cent on peas and 40 per cent on chickpeas in the last two months. Tradeau is visiting Gujarat today but interestingly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not with him, as he was during the visits of other world leaders like Xi Jinping, Shinzo Abe and Benjamin Netanyah.

Now, with Sajjan's intervention, the meeting between Capt Amarinder and Trudeau is official.

"Wheels up for India and a busy visit, focused on creating good jobs and strengthening the deep connection between the people of our two countries", Trudeau tweeted on Friday before leaving for New Delhi with his family.

Canada is home to roughly half a million Sikhs and a significant number appear to back a decades-long Sikh campaign in India's northern Punjab state for an independent homeland of Khalistan.

Nigel Selig, the chief representative in India for Export Development Canada, said from a trade perspective the political concerns are not a big deal.
