It started off terribly for the US men's hockey team, which choked away a 2-0 lead in the third period and lost 3-2 in overtime to heavy underdog Slovenia Wednesday in their 2018 Olympic opener.

Rochester's Brian Gionta did not figure in either American goal.

At the 2014 Games, the USA lost in the bronze-medal game.

One athlete to watch is Jordan Greenway, from Canton, who helped the US win gold at the 2017 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship and the 2015 IIHF U18 Men's World Hockey Championship.

With no National Hockey League players participating in the Winter Olympics for the first time since 1994, there is a bit of mystery surrounding the tournament as it begins on Valentine's Day. Korea lost 4-1. But it was Korea's first goal in the tournament after losing 8-0 in each of its first two games, and the score sent the fans in Kwandong Hockey Center into a frenzy. Terry also helped the USA win gold in the 2015 IIHF U18 Men's World Hockey Championship and was drafted to the Anaheim Ducks in 2015. Mursak tied the game on a rebound goal with 1:37 to play.

Fortunately for Russian Federation and the USA, all 12 teams advance beyond the group stage to the single-elimination portion of the tournament, but group play determines seeding; the victor of each group, plus the highest ranking runner-up, earn a first-round bye. But the US likely has enough talent to open with a win.

"It was exciting to get my first, but it would have been much better to get a win tonight", said Greenway, one of four American college players in the USA team. Jordan Greenway (one goal, four shots, good effort) was a bright spot for the Americans, but overall it felt like Team USA's adrenaline fizzled.

Bobby Sanguinetti reacts after Slovenia scores the game-tying goal against the United States at the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 on February 14, 2018 in Gangneung, South Korea. O'Neil also registered the secondary assist on the goal. Slovenia's Blaz Gregorc cut the deficit in half with a little over 14 minutes left in regulation. A Noah Welch turnover left Ryan Zapolski out to dry and the U.S.net wide open, but Welch makes up for it by lunging in front of the yawning crease to make the save on a sure goal. Forward Garrett Roe flew down the left wing and dished the puck to a waiting O'Neill to give the USA a 1-0 lead 17:44 in. James Wisniewski goes off for high-sticking and we're four aside.
