The beta for PS4 software update 5.50 has begun, and it's a preview of the (extremely) long-awaited features coming for all of us once testing concludes. The new system software will introduce supersampling for Ps4 Pro, play time management, library UI improvements and more.

Elsewhere, play time management gives family managers and adult family members who are set as guardian the ability to set time limits on when and for how long each child can play for. To avoid saving woes or untimely quitting, the child will be notified during gameplay before playtime is over.

The firm writes: "The family managers/guardians also have the option to add extra game time via their smartphone or PC", Sony says. There will be an icon beside those free games to let the user know if their subscription has expired and they need to register again to continue playing.

Sony is also updating the Library UI to include a "This PS4" tab, which shows all of the applications installed on the console. And if you were looking for custom audio loadouts, according to Sony, you'll be able to do this easily through the Headset Companion App.

The PlayStation Blog has posted details of the features found in the beta test of the 5.50 firmware upgrade. You'll be able to zoom and crop to make sure you get the right background for you. To set the logo and background, head to Events Teams select your team Edit Team Profile.

HDTV Supersampling for PS4 Pro. The new update will also allow the user to hide certain apps under the "Purchased" tab is in the Library. This lets those with HDTVs get a better visual experience when playing some PS4 games.

Your username tab will show everything you've ever purchased for PS4 in one subdivision, and every game you've claimed via the PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection in another.

With the launch of 5.50, you'll be able to access custom friends' lists directly from the Quick Menu. This should make it easier to search games you've bought but haven't installed. They can do so via the pulldown menu under the Friends tab in Quick Menu. The Quick Menu has also been updated with more options when you're listening to music through Spotify.

When you're on the Media Player or the USB Music Player, "triangle" will work as the shortcut for play or pause, and the "square" button as the volume control. "Because PS4 Pro's added power and modes benefit different games in different ways, please note that certain games' image clarity may not improve with this new feature".

There are many PS4 themes and custom wallpapers online, including our own gallery of hundreds of video game-related images.

Let us know which features you're most excited about, and remember it's not too late to join the beta.
