Colts putting 'finishing touches' on Josh McDaniels' deal

The news isn't a surprise, since it has been widely reported that McDaniels and the Colts were in talks about the hire since before the Super Bowl.

It will be interesting to see how this hiring affects an offseason that Colts fans have been salivating over since before this past season even began. Philadelphia won that game, beating Vince Lombardi and Bart Starr, and repeated history on Sunday by beating the New England Patriots with Tom Brady and Bill Belichick.

The Patriots offensive coordinator's future ultimately seemed set weeks ago when it was expected McDaniels would take the helm in Indianapolis. However, things aren't so certain when sifting through the coaching candidates for the Patriots' vacant offensive coordinator position.

"I'm incredibly honored and grateful to be named Head Coach of the Detroit Lions", Patricia said in a statement. Brady threw three touchdown passes and no interceptions and the Patriots didn't punt a single time.

He will have some skeptics based on what happened in Denver, but this is a good situation for McDaniels, provided that quarterback Andrew Luck is healthy.

Now, the AFC South becomes the most interesting division to watch this offseason.

The departures of McDaniels and Patricia leave Belichick with a substantial coaching staff reshuffle on his hands for the close season. There was some speculation during the Super Bowl McDaniels might end up returning to the Patriots.

Less than 48 hours has passed since a disappointing Super Bowl loss and two key coaches on the Patriots staff have already departed New England. Clearly that's not the case.

The Colts, mostly because of Luck, were able to maneuver and land McDaniels after he became a hot commodity again.

It has certainly bee a hard few days for the New England Patriots.
