Pompeo said he agrees with the intelligence community that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 Presidential campaign and other elections in Europe. The head of Russia's military intelligence, the GRU, also came to Washington, though it's not clear that he met with Pompeo.

Naryshkin is among the senior Russian defense and intelligence officials who had previously been sanctioned by the Obama administration in 2014 in retaliation for Russian's invasion of Ukraine.

The Russian Embassy in Washington announced the Pompeo meeting in a January 30 tweet.

Antonov's counterpart - Huntsman - confirmed that Pompeo met with "senior-most" Russian intelligence officials last week, but did not name Naryshkin specifically.

The CIA would not confirm the meetings, saying only that any interactions with foreign intelligence officials would have been conducted in accordance with US law and in consultation with appropriate departments and agencies.

"When those meetings take place, you and the American people should rest assured that we cover very hard subjects in which American and Russian interests do not align", Pompeo wrote.

Schumer had called for the White House to release details of Naryshkin's trip and whether the decision this week not to impose additional Russian Federation sanctions was related to his visit.

Coats' office has said that it can not discuss the schedules of USA intelligence officials and that "any interaction with foreign intelligence agencies would have been conducted in accordance with US law and in consultation with appropriate departments and agencies". They anxious the Kremlin could conclude the United States is open to forgiving Russian Federation for its actions and wasn't resolved to forcefully prevent future meddling.

The administration's dealings with Moscow remains a focal point as Justice Department independent counsel Robert S. Mueller's probe pursues allegations that Trump campaign officials colluded with to tamper in the election. "Which U.S. officials did he meet with?"

A January 2017 USA intelligence report concluded that Russian Federation conducted an influence campaign of hacking and other measures aimed at swinging the 2016 presidential vote to Trump over his Democratic challenger, Hillary Clinton.

Asked if Trump's use of Twitter posed any national security issues, he said: "Hasn't caused us any trouble".

On Monday, the Trump administration unveiled a list of more than 200 Russian government and business figures who could face sanctions in the wake of Russia's election meddling.

"While we do not discuss the schedules of USA intelligence leaders, rest assured that any interaction with foreign intelligence agencies would have been conducted in accordance with USA law and in consultation with appropriate departments and agencies", a CIA spokesman said.

Democratic lawmakers on Tuesday also demanded to know why Naryshkin, who is on the sanctions list, was allowed to enter the United States. The publication could not establish whether Korobov took part in the meeting.

The Post noted that Moscow and the US have shared information on terrorism in the past, but the process is not usually so robust or close.

"Nobody in either party trusts this president to represent American national interests when it comes to Russia", Brown said.

The intelligence community has been actively trying to suppress and deter Russian Federation.

A Central Intelligence Agency spokesman said there was nothing to see here.
