"[Roberto] Mancini was in Rome but we didn't contact him, Conte seems eager to wear the national shirt again, [Carlo] Ancelotti opens and closes the door and [Claudio] Ranieri isn't out either".

In an interview with Sky Sport, the 72-year-old former general secretary of the Italian Olympic Committee explained: "First of all we need to think about the coach who'll be sitting on the bench for the next two friendlies at the end of March".

Conte's place at the Chelsea helm is in doubt as the Premier League champions sit fourth in the table, having slipped 18 points adrift of leaders Manchester City following Wednesday's 3-0 defeat at home to Bournemouth.

'The names are the ones you know, ' the new FIGC commissioner confirmed after his appointment on Thursday.

To help Fabbricini out with a Proper Football Man, the legendary Alessandro Costacurta was appointed sub-commissioner and it is he who is now set to recruit the new head coach.

Conte left the job for Chelsea after Euro 2016, but replacement Gian Piero Ventura was sacked after Italy lost to Sweden in the World Cup play-off last November.

After weeks of speculation, Chelsea finally brought in a forward but it doesn't seem like the rumours will go away now that the transfer window is shut.

"I can tell (you) that Costacurta is a friend", the former midfielder said.

"There's no-one in pole position, we have to evaluate the pros and cons".

'We have to start talks soon, ' said Costacurta of their search for an Italy boss.

"Mancini? I know him well".

"We have to make the best decision and then to work with them, because it is important to adapt themselves with our idea of football".

He played 59 times for Italy and finished runner-up at the 1994 World Cup.
