Pierce County Deputy shot, killed after responding to a burglary

Authorities launched a dragnet after a Washington state sheriff's deputy was shot and killed while chasing a pair of suspected burglars late Sunday, police said.

Someone called 911 just before 11:30 p.m. Sunday saying an intruder was inside a home in Frederickson, a suburb just southeast of Tacoma.

He's described as having a large pointy nose and pock marks on right side of face, and was seen wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and black beanie.

Thirty-four-year-old Daniel McCarthy of Yelm, Wash. died in surgery for gunshot wounds at St. Joseph's Medical Center. Residents were asked to stay inside their homes as police search for the outstanding suspect.

The Bethel School District canceled all classes Monday because of the ongoing manhunt, which included authorities blocking roads leading to the district's bus facility and preventing bus drivers from starting their t pickup routes.

Pastor said all of the men and women in uniform who walked alongside the American flag-draped coffin Monday morning will return to their line of duty without skipping a beat.

McCartney, who enlisted in the Navy on September 10, 2002, was an electronics technician 2nd class (E-5).

Governor Jay Inslee issued a statement on the death of Deputy McCartney Monday.

Much of the Yelm community mourns the passing of McCartney as he was an active member and coach at CrossFit in Yelm.

"Deputy, Father, Husband, Son, Friend, Brother". Deputy McCartney was a Navy veteran and served the department for three years.

Malone organized a YouCaring donation page to directly care for McCartney's family.
