The team has managed to generate a diesel V-6 that will wear ratings of 250 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque, enough to command a best-in-class towing capacity of 11,400 pounds.

Specific to the diesel engine, a 5.4-gallon DEF tank has been added which Ford says should last 10,000 miles before refilling.

Features such as a variable-geometry turbocharger and compacted-graphite iron block material construction are utilized in order to provide improved fuel efficiency, as well as strong and continuous torque delivery throughout the entire rev range.

Spring 2018 marks the first time a diesel engine will be found under the hood of Ford's F-150 full-size truck, with the inclusion of a newly-developed 3.0-liter Power Stroke turbocharged V6 diesel engine.

Diesels typically command premium prices, and while Ford won't discuss MSRPs the new 3.0-liter Power Stroke V6 seems likely to be consistent with that trait.

The F-150, Ford's full-size truck made in Kansas City and elsewhere, is getting a diesel engine. With 310 hp and 555 lb-ft of torque, the 5.0-liter turbodiesel V8 powering Nissan's Titan XD is a different concept, straddling the border between half-ton and heavy-duty pickups.

"We're confident we'll get there", Ford vice-president of powertrain engineering David Filipe said in a media briefing ahead of the official launch announcement. For 2018, stronger axles coupled with the F-150's boxed, high-strength steel frame make for a more robust package.

"This gives F-150 Power Stroke owners more power and more passing capability in harsh conditions". In more moderate conditions, the engine control system uses a viscous coupler to back down the fan's load, and close the two shutters on the radiator for better aerodynamic efficiency, as well as reduced parasitic engine loss. Pricing will be announced later this month, when dealers begin taking pre-orders.
