The man, Prabhu Ramamoorthy, was accused of abusing a 22-year-old woman seated by the window next to him while his wife was on his other side on a Spirit Airlines flight from Las Vegas to Detroit early on January 3.

A 34-year-old Indian national was arrested and charged for sexually abusing a woman onboard a flight in MI on Thursday, reported The Washington Post.

The victim, in her statement to the investigators, claimed that she woke up to find her trousers and shirt unbuttoned and the man's hand inside her trousers.

She also said the couple had requested a flight attendant seat the woman elsewhere.

The woman was offered a different seat and Prabhu Ramamoorthy was arrested after the plane landed. He was taken into custody, Ramamoorthy admitted to an FBI agent that he "might have" unhooked the woman's bra and "cupped her (clothed) breast", but said he only put a finger in her trousers and did not insert it into her vagina despite trying to, the federal complaint stated.

Since he isn't a U.S. subject, Ramamoorthy could ask for the legislature to inform his nation of origin to help him with legitimate portrayal and to contact family, lawyer Amanda Jawad of the U.S. Lawyer's Office said in court Wednesday. Wayne County Airport Authority took Ramamoorthy into custody when the flight landed at Detroit Metro Airport.

Mr Ramamoorthy denied the accusations, telling police he was himself asleep after taking a pill.

The woman was offered a different seat and Ramamoorthy was arrested after the plane landed, the court documents stated. He said he hadn't done anything besides learning from his wife that "the woman was sleeping on his knees". But the prosecutor said that "flight attendants did not report that anyone asked them to change seats other than the victim". Magistrate Judge R. Steven Whalen ordered Ramamoorthy to be held pending trial. "He was brazen enough to do this basically in public, next to his wife where anyone could have seen him", calling the incident a "very unusual case".

Mr Ramamoorthy was held without bail after appearing in a federal court in MI on Thursday after prosecutors argued there was a risk he could abscond.

The prosecutor, Amanda Jawad claimed that Ramanmoorthy had given "conflicting statements" saying, 'both Ramamoorthy and his wife gave lengthier statements later indicating that the pill Ramamoorthy had taken was "plain Tylenol"'.

Ramamoorthy has been working as a project manager at a technology group for about two and a half years.
