Hi-Rez Studios announced that its team based shooter, Paladins, will be getting a new "battle royale" mode called Paladins: Battlegrounds.

Hi-Rez says that Paladins: Battlegrounds was "designed from the ground up to be played in teams" and will use the same class-based team setup from the main game. The MOBA roots can definitely make a difference in the Battle Royale genre; just think about the different roles like supporters and tanks. Fortnite, a third-person shooter, was among the first, launching Fortnite Battle Royale late past year. Whereas other battle royale games focus on a single-player experience, Paladins: Battlegrounds is instead developed with team-based gameplay in mind.

Paladins: Battlegrounds is set for a release later this year. Will Battle Royale work well with Paladins? They can also explore the map aboard their mounts, looting any nearby outposts and following zeppelins that drop legendary gear. Making fights between the 100 players more frequent.

An alpha of Paladins' Battlegrounds is playable at this week's Hi-Rez Expo, and the full release is expected later in 2018. It will launch alongside the new Trade District map. Moji is Paladins' 35th hero, not to mention a member of the new Leipori race. She rides a summoned two-headed dragon into battle, feeding it snacks to reload its magical energy. You can get a glimpse of both new items in the reveal trailer. Look for this game mode, along with Moji, to hit Paladins' PC version on January 10 and the game's console versions on January 17.

Esports Insider says: We're going to see a whole lot of battle royale type games appear this year trying to grab a slice of the pie that PUBG has beautifully baked this year.
