Risky wind chills, bitter cold

This will quickly change as we head into the overnight hours and ring in 2018 as temperatures are expected to be in the low 40s to upper 30s by midnight with wind chills in the low 30s to upper 20s. If you go outside, make sure to wear a hat and gloves to protect yourself.

The Wind Chill Warning impacts Kane, Kendall, Ogle, Grundy, Iroquois, DeKalb, McHenry, LaSalle, Kankakee and Lee until noon Monday.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill advisory for southeastern MI and the Upper Peninsula this New Year's Eve. If it's far enough offshore, we'll either stay dry or have just a little light snow, but lots of wind is still likely Thursday night and Friday as a fresh batch of bitterly cold Arctic air comes racing in.

Check out the wind chill numbers across the country. By Saturday, highs will be in the 60s and by Sunday expect highs in the lower to mid 70s. We tied the old record of 12 degrees from all the way back in 1899!

A wind chill warning means the combination of very cold air and the wind will create dangerously low wind chill values. "It's what we get here, but you know, it didn't stop us from getting out and having fun, having a good time", said Brian Stein.

Wednesday will be mostly sunny with a high near 28 and a low around 14.
