Maine's minimum wage will increase to $10 an hour in the new year thanks to a law approved by voters in 2016.

The federal government established a minimum wage in a 1938 law called the Fair Labor Standards Act, which also marked the first time that employers were legally required to pay workers overtime for certain jobs.

Workers who receive tips will get a wage increase from $4.08 an hour to $4.15.

The minimum wage for those over the age of 25 is now £7.50 an hour.

ME is one of 18 states, including three in New England, raising wages in January.

The minimum wage will rise to $11 an hour for workers in Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester counties and $10.40 an hour for employees in the rest of the state. The increase will be phased in over a longer period for workers in the rest of the state.

Additionally, it's important to note that increased wages may lead to a stronger economy.

However, the minimum wage increases only apply to restaurants that are part of a chain of 30 or more locations nationwide. A statewide increase goes into effect Sunday.

"We see the $12 an hour as being a pathway to economic justice", says Farris. "Running a business and keeping people employed in and of itself is challenging, additional costs and mandates from New York State make it even more hard". And while states like OH and Kentucky have blocked wage increases, others like Colorado and Hawaii just instituted pay raises of nearly a dollar.

Beginning New Year's Day, a new family leave policy will take effect, allowing job-protected paid time off for new parents, caretakers, and family members of active military personnel serving overseas.
