The woman was 22-year-old Tonie Wells.

Witnesses on the scene allegedly heard an argument and something falling down the stairs, The Post reports.

NYPD investigators believe that Mr Wells pushed his wife of just nine months down the stairs and then fled the scene, leaving their daughter with her mother's dead body for an unknown period of time.

Wells' husband, Barry Wells, was taken into police custody around 6 p.m. Wednesday with the assistance of family, friends and the New Rochelle Police Department, Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said on Thursday.

It was then, shortly before 10 a.m., that NY police officers found the pregnant 22-year-old's dead body at the bottom of a basement staircase, WCBS reported, but it wasn't the first time someone had called NYPD wondering what might be happening inside that Crown Heights home in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Most damning were revelations that NYPD cops had been called to the Brooklyn home earlier that Wednesday to check on Wells who told 911 she was "scared" of her husband because he was 'acting amusing, ' according to police sources cited by the nypost.

A man is in custody Thursday in connection to the death of his 22-year-old Brooklyn wife, police sources say. "If they did, they would have seen her".

Neighbors later called police after hearing the young woman's 2-year-old baby crying. She was nice. He was always pleasant.

Wells' Facebook page shows she married her on-and-off boyfriend in the spring but the nature of their current relationship was unclear.

While the exact charges filed against Wells have yet to be revealed, and details on an official cause of death is pending, new reports of negligence on behalf of the NYPD has emerged.

The NYPD's Internal Affairs Bureau has launched a probe into the suspended cops.

According to sources, police responded to two prior domestic incidents involving the couple.
