5th Person Dies in San Diego County's Flu Season

Public health officials are reporting an unusually high number of influenza cases for this time of the year, and they are expected to continue to increase for the next several weeks at least.

We are entering the peak of flu season much earlier this year, so if you haven't gotten a flu shot yet, please get one.

Fayette, Jefferson and Pike counties had the highest numbers of flu cases in the state.

A total of 563 cases were reported last week, more than double the 227 cases in the previous week, county officials said.

The Big Sandy region, including Floyd, Johnson, Magoffin, Martin and Pike counties, had the most laboratory-confirmed flu cases for the week, with 81.

Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs.

"We have very good systems with our colleagues in Europe that show this, and last season we had a very major excess number of deaths as a result of the flu, around 1,000".

Influenza is a respiratory illness with symptoms that may include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue.

The Peterson Health staff has the following pieces of advice, saying the flu can knock you off your feet; but knowing how to pamper oneself can help you feel better faster.

Other tips include washing your hands frequently, staying home when you are sick and avoiding touching your hands to your face.

Young children and those who are elderly or have chronic disease are especially vulnerable to the flu's more severe consequences.
