One woman was killed and over eight civilians suffered injuries on Tuesday during the clashes in Shopian, sparked by the killing of two militants in the night long gunfight with security forces.

It was reported that the gunfight started on Monday evening in Batmuran village of Shopian district when the troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police allegedly surrounded the house.

Jammu Kashmir Police Chief SP Vaid said that two bodies of militants were recovered from the encounter site while Deputy Inspector General of Police for South Kashmir Range SP Pani said that one of the killed militants was a local.

"Two militants have been killed so far and the operation is still in progress", the official said.

The police are searching the site. He claimed that the civilian died in cross firing between militants and armed forces.

A police official identified the slain militants as Tanveer Ahmad from Batmuran Shopian and Ali alias Qari of Pakistan. A woman whom the locals identified as Rubeena Jan, daughter of Abdul Rashid was hit by a bullet in her abdomen.

"With today's killing of a civilian in Shopian, the number of civilians killed in Kashmir in 2017 has reached 60".

The state administration has ordered the imposition of curfew in at least six police station areas of Srinagar city and at some places in Shopian. The surge in violence comes after massive anti-India protests and clashes erupted in Kashmir when a popular rebel leader was killed over a year ago.

Over 200 militants and at least 40 civilians have died this year, the deadliest since 2010, in various conflicts in the territory. Last year, 15 civilians were killed and 285 were injured in similar events.
