Shazam is a popular song recognition service in the world with millions of its users around the globe.

Apple which revolutionised music with the introduction of the the iPod and iPhone, said Shazam was a natural fit for its Apple Music streaming service.

In a statement, an Apple spokesperson told The Verge: "We are thrilled that Shazam and its talented team will be joining Apple".

Now the Shazam app lets you pick your music streaming platform of choice to hear the song that was recognised. The last major acquisition made by Apple was in 1996 when it purchased Next Computer a cost equivalent to $600 million in today's currency. According to a report by TechCrunch, Apple has been in talks with Shazam for about five months to acquire it.

Through all of this, Shazam has developed some interesting partnerships, specifically with Apple and Spotify (who together get around 1 million referrals each month via Shazam), and Snapchat, which now has an integration with Shazam where Snapchat users can "recognize music, engage with Shazam content, and send their music and artist discoveries as Snaps to their friends". While the company has not revealed the financial terms of the deal, it is reportedly worth around $400 million.

Even so, Apple announced Monday that it's purchasing Shazam. After a few moments, Shazam would send a text message containing the song's artist and title.

Shazam already integrates with Apple Music, referring many of its 100 million users to play songs on its platform. Also, said that we have exciting plans in the store and looking forward to combining with Shazam. And this for sure which Apple will try to do in next steps.

The next year, it launched Apple Music, a music-streaming service and live radio station akin to Spotify and Pandora. However, in 2015, the app was updated with voice-recognition abilities that further bolstered its popularity and also paved the way for AR.

As Apple Music chases Spotify's subscriber base numbers, such acquisitions will help add more value to Apple's own services.

The acquisition makes ideal sense when you consider Shazam's talents, and Apple's focus on where to take technology next.
