Chairman of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission Rod Sims last week said the arrival of Amazon would be good for consumers, but less so for incumbent retailers.

Crucially, Amazon's "Prime" service, which in the United States gives shoppers ultra quick, free delivery via its futuristic nationwide network of warehouses and delivery methods, will not at first be available in Australia.

"We've always believed that Amazon is here to assist the retailers of Australia to grow and develop their businesses both locally and internationally". It's a move that could have a significant impact on local retailers.

"By concentrating on providing a great shopping experience and by constantly innovating on behalf of customers, we hope to earn the trust and the custom of Australian shoppers in the years to come", Braeuniger said.

Australians living in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Adelaide will have access to Amazon's fabled next-day delivery service for $9.99 while Perth and regional cities in across the country will pay $11.99 for two-day delivery.

United States internet giant Amazon launched in Australia today in time for Christmas, with retailers scrambling to cut costs and boost their online offerings as they brace for an expected shake-up of the sector.

"Over time, we will create thousands of new jobs and invest hundreds of millions of dollars in Australia", he said.

While Amazon has been busy hiring for its music offering since before June, filling the roles of Music Curator, Senior Music Curator, Senior Marketing Manager, and Head of Digital Music, Amazon Music Unlimited won't launch until early 2018.

Keep an eye out for more deals as other retailers try to keep up.

Amazon Marketplace connects customers to millions of products and helps sellers reach more than 300 million active customers worldwide, the company said. A Lenoxx 9-inch Twin Screen Portable DVD player, which retails for $149 on Kogan.com, is $172.38 plus $9.45 delivery on Amazon.

In 2016, more than 100,000 small businesses across the globe achieved sales of over US$100,000 through selling on Amazon.
