David Unsworth has been in temporary charge since Ronald Koeman was sacked on October 23 and the under-23s boss had made clear his desire to take on the job permanently. Unsworth is to take the team for tonight's match.

This will be the 10th English club managerial position of the 63-year-old's career, with Allardyce most recently having guided Crystal Palace to safety last season.

Can Allardyce get Everton going?

"Ultimately, it's the ambition of the club, the ambition of the owner and the Board, allied to the fact that it's Everton and all the fantastic history, which have proved to be key for me".

"Obviously, the club has gone through a hard spell", Allardyce said, "and hopefully I can put that behind us as quickly as possible and start looking upwards again".

That link to the other side of Stanley Park has seen the Goodison faithful show their anger on Twitter, with one fan saying that majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri is a "fraud". It's what you need to have and hopefully we can deliver to the fans to get this club high up the league. It is a great club. Burnley manager Sean Dyche and Shakhtar Donetsk coach Paul Fonseca were also linked with the job.

Palace chairman Steve Parish agreed to his departure and it is believed the south London club would receive a compensation package of around £2m if Allardyce takes a new job before next summer.

While the return of Wayne Rooney cost the club nothing, the additions of Gylfi Sigurdsson, Sandro Ramirez, Jordan Pickford, Ashley Williams, Michael Keane and Davy Klaassen set them back in the region of $200 million.

Poor old Everton. They sit in 16th place after a bad start to the season but supporters will be hoping serial Premier League survivalist Sam Allardyce can turn things around.

His first game will be at home to Huddersfield on Saturday, and he will no doubt want to cap his first game off with a victory.
