He said they were delighted to be holding the wedding in the "beautiful grounds of Windsor". She will join Prince William, Kate and Prince Harry's royal foundation as its fourth patron, and work with her husband to support causes close to her heart.

Mr Knauf added that the couple were "grateful to the Queen for granting permission for the use of the Chapel".

"They will be making sure it reflects who they are as a couple", he said.

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge said she is "absolutely thrilled" by Harry's engagement to Meghan, while Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall said she is "absolutely delighted".

Her beagle Guy is, however, now in Britain.

Bogart, had been rehomed with friends at an undisclosed location - presumably in Canada or the United States. Meghan moved into Prince Harry's home, Nottingham Cottage in Kensington Palace, earlier this month and stayed there whenever she would visit her boyfriend.

"As with all members of the Royal family, Windsor is a very special place for Prince Harry and he and Ms Markle have regularly spent time there over the past year and a half, " Prince Harry's communications secretary Jason Knauf said.

The actress will not be continuing her work on gender with the United Nations or with other organisations, but instead will be starting her charity work as a full-time royal afresh. The exact date was not revealed.

Mr Knauf said Harry and Ms Markle "want the public to feel part of their day" - and are looking at ways to achieve that.

Instead, they have opted for the lower-key choice of St George's Chapel at the Windsor Castle royal estate west of London. He said when she visited Buckingham Palace to meet the queen, "the corgis took to her straight away". "He got on one knee", Markle said. Harry's father Prince Charles, who is heir to the British throne, married Camilla in a low-key civil ceremony in 2005 because both bride and groom were divorced.

The palace confirmed the Queen will be a guest at Harry's wedding.
