Best Times to Travel for Thanksgiving

An estimated 50.9 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more over the four-day weekend, the most since 2005, according to AAA's annual forecast.

According to AAA, about 50 million cars will be on the road during this year's Thanksgiving holiday, which is approximately 1.5 million more than last year.

That's a more than three percent increase over a year ago, making it the busiest Thanksgiving since 2005.

The tech giant has mapped out the best and worst times to travel to and from Houston this holiday, based on historical Google Maps traffic data. They say at its peak, drivers on some interstates and highways could see delays of almost 300 percent over the optimal trip.

Alternate Travel: Travel by trains and other modes (including buses and cruises) is expected to increase 1.1 percent to 1.48 million travelers. By doing so, you're not only creating a more pleasant environment, you're also helping protect your health by managing your stress.

According to AAA, gas prices in the state of Pennsylvania are about 41 cents higher than they were this time a year ago.

"During the holiday season, millions of people will travel across the Commonwealth to be with loved ones, and we are making it a priority to keep the roads safe", Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker said. Idaho's average gas price was $2.66, and the US average was $2.53.

The Thanksgiving projection comes from AAA Michigan, the leisure travel organization. That number is the highest volume in more than a decade.
