14 killed, 9 missing in Andhra boat tragedy

At least five people were killed and 11 others missing after a tourist boat carrying 38 passengers capsized in the Krishna near Ibrahimpatnam, Andhra Pradesh, on Sunday.

The incident occurred at Ibrahimpatnam Ferry Ghat.

Thirty-two of the victims belonging to Ongole town were on a picnic tour.

"So far, 16 bodies have been recovered from river". "If they had taken the insurance under Chandranna Bima Scheme, an additional amount of Rs 2 lakh would be paid to each family", he said. As many as 15 people were either rescued by local fishermen or swam to safety.

Fifteen persons were rescued by local fishermen andNational Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams were pressedinto service to trace the missing persons, he said. The panic-stricken passengers tried to rush to one side, but the inexperienced driver failed to control and the boat overturned. Some of the survivors complained that the police that the boat was shaking right from moment it started from Bhavani Island.

Tourism Minister Akhila Priya ordered probe into the incident.

Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu, the Chief Minister, Opposition leader Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy and film actor and Jana Sena party president Pawan Kalyan were among who expressed their shock and grief over the incident.
