Special prosecutor Robert Mueller is examining a meeting Mr Flynn had with senior Turkish officials weeks after Mr Donald Trump won the presidential race a year ago, NBC News and the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported.

It is unclear how Flynn, as national security adviser, could have successfully carried out either alleged request.

The lawyer for former US national security adviser Michael Flynn has strongly denied media reports suggesting that a client of his may have been involved in a plan to seize a Muslim cleric and deliver him to Turkey in exchange for millions of dollars, branded the allegations as "outrageous" and "false". It was arranged by his lobbying firm, the Flynn Intel Group.

Special prosecutor Robert Mueller is examining a meeting Flynn had with senior Turkish officials weeks after Donald Trump won the presidential race previous year, NBC News and the Wall Street Journal reported. In return for not prosecuting him for his group's 2010 leak of State Department emails, Assange would allegedly provide proof that Russian Federation was not the source of the hacked Democratic emails.

Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating Russian manipulation of the 2016 United States election, has already indicted Trump's former campaign manager and another senior fundraiser on charges including money laundering and a former foreign policy adviser has pleaded guilty to perjury. Special counsel Mueller's ability to gather enough evidence to make the charges stick could lead to Flynn making a plea bargain in exchange for cooperation on the Russia-related investigations.

The fact that Flynn never registered as a foreign agent of Turkey - much like Manafort didn't register for doing work for Ukraine before he worked for Trump - gives fuel to a federal grand jury to indict him for that very omission.

NBC News reported that Flynn is under investigation for involvement in the return of an alleged political enemy of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo─čan to Turkey.

Flynn did not register with the US Justice Department as a foreign agent until March, a month after he was ousted from the White House following reports that he had misled Vice President Mike Pence about his communications with Russian officials.

"Out of respect for the process of the various investigations regarding the 2016 campaign, we have intentionally avoided responding to every rumour or allegation raised in the media", Flynn's lawyer Robert Kelner told the press. Flynn has expressed interest in an immunity deal and Mueller, in his dealings with former foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos, has shown himself ready to negotiate.
