House arrest likely punishment for arrested UCLA players

LiAngelo, Riley and Hill won't play when UCLA tips off its 2017-18 season against Georgia Tech in Shanghai tomorrow night.

Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott also released a statement, saying UCLA was "cooperating fully with local authorities".

Lonzo Ball says he has not spoken with his younger brother LiAngelo since he and two other UCLA basketball players were reportedly involved in a shoplifting incident in China.

Chinese foreign ministry officials previously said that the Chinese government had reported the incident to U.S. officials.

Scott did not elaborate on what occurred and said the league was directing all inquiries about the specifics of the matter to UCLA.

Ball, Riley and Hill were questioned about allegedly stealing from a Louis Vuitton store during the team's visit to Hangzhou, home of the game's sponsor, e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. The situation had been murky given the strictness of Chinese laws with some originally suggesting the trio could spend three to 10 years in prison. "Whether in the United States or overseas, we expect our student-athletes to uphold the highest standards", he added.

A spokesperson from the US State Department told CNN it is "aware of reports of three US citizens arrested in China".

UCLA Coach Steve Alford has confirmed that the three players will not play in Friday's game.

LaVar Ball, his wife Tina and son LaMelo had breakfast with the UCLA team in Shanghai on Wednesday morning.

Van Gundy's contempt was seemingly more at the situation itself, than any one entity in particular, but was specifically outraged that the players would be taking an overseas trip and miss a bunch of class time.
