Johnson will craft the new trilogy with longtime collaborator Ram Bergman. Many are so excited for his film, in fact, that he was the heavy favorite to take over Star Wars: Episode IX when Colin Trevorrow left.

"We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi", says Lucasfilm boss and producer Kathleen Kennedy.

Disney on Thursday announced plans for a new "Star Wars" trilogy as it builds on the beloved and profitable science fiction film franchise. We recently speculated that Dave Filoni, the executive producer of the hit animated series Star Wars Rebels, might be making the jump to a live action Star Wars show, and now that we know for sure it's happening, this could be a ideal opportunity for him.

"Rian will do wonderful things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy", she added.

Disney touted the box office success of two new "Star Wars" the last two released films, and expressed confidence "The Last Jedi" set for release next month would be a hit.

The next Disney "Star Wars" film, "The Last Jedi", lands in USA theaters on December 15. Set between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope - Rogue One eat your heart out - the George Lucas-backed show was pitched as a "much darker" and "more character-based" adventure than its cinematic peers.

"We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi", Johnson and Bergman said in a joint statement.

That's about all we know right now about the forthcoming new movie series: "The Last Jedi" is coming to theatres on December 15, and then the final episode of the Skywalker saga will be released in 2019.

Starting in December and through the remainder of 2017, Star Wars Battlefront 2 players have plenty of free content and activities to look forward to.
