Luiz feels Conte is 'punishing' him for Costa friendship

Former Chelsea player Ray Wilkins has backed Antonio Conte's decision to drop David Luiz for the crucial Premier League game against Manchester United on Sunday.

Perhaps it was the kamikaze 3-3 draw with Roma, at Stamford Bridge, that convinced Christensen and Kante should come as a pair - as that clearly seems to be his thinking.

But having missed all of Chelsea's preseason to represent his country, Mikel quickly found himself out of Conte's plans, with the Italian eventually neglecting to include him at all when listing his central midfield options in news conferences. I have a squad with 16 senior players and five young players.

"Personally, I don't believe Conte will still be in West London this time next year - you can tell by his demeanour that something is wrong".

Chelsea now head into the worldwide break on the back of their win over Jose Mourinho's men and Christensen has key World Cup qualifying action on the agenda with Denmark.

We have to be patient with the team and defend in the right way.

According to the Daily Mirror, "Luiz paid the price for questioning Conte's tactics in a team meeting last week". Very simple. The coach has to make the best decision for the team, and tonight the best decision for the team was to play with Christensen and to have, on the bench, [Ethan] Ampadu. "He's lackadaisical as a defender but I think he is a very good midfield player and I have said this on numerous occasions".

"I repeat: I have to put my face to every situation and then sometimes to make important decisions".

"Maybe in the future I can decide a different way, or continue in this way". It's normal. This can happen to every one of my players, if I see they are not in good form.

Pressed by BBC about whether Luiz has a future at Chelsea, Conte added, "He has to work really hard, otherwise he is on the bench or in the stands".

"I think that [Jose and I] shake the hand two times, it's enough".
