NLDS Game 3 Prediction: Can Diamondbacks stay alive vs. Dodgers? 10/9/17

The Arizona Diamondbacks couldn't prevent the Los Angeles Dodgers from beating them in the NLDS, but they could prevent a repeat of 2013's celebration.

The Dodgers, who won 104 games for the best record in baseball and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, face the victor of the Nationals-Cubs series in the NLCS.

Monday night, the Los Angeles Dodgers completed the NLDS sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks to punch their ticket to the NLDS (LAD 3, ARI 1). Kenley Jansen recorded his second save of the series. Acquired at the July 31 trade deadline from the Texas Rangers - precisely for moments such as these - Darvish, a four-time all-star, delivered a gem in Monday night's clincher, reduced to a five-inning stint only because the Dodgers' bullpen is so deep and functional these days.

"That's just the media [talking]".

"Odds are that this exact same group will probably never be together again, so it was a pleasure to be a part of this group", Descalso said. "We laugh about that now".

It is possible to make the case the Dodgers, at least as they appeared against the Diamondbacks, are even better now than they were at their regular-season best - which is saying something, considering they were 55 games over.500 at their high-water mark (91-36 on August 25) and were on a 116-win pace at that point.

Both the stars and role players have made an impact for the Dodgers in the first two games of this series.

Even with Zack Greinke on the mound, the Dodgers did not even flinch.

Two losses in Los Angeles featured uncharacteristically bad starting pitching and some defensive lapses. It's all vastness and pumped-in snake-hiss noises and thin air that makes baseballs soar to impossible heights, as if the sense of scale is thrown off by all that open space and endless sky. A solo shot by the struggling Bellinger extended the Dodgers lead to 2-0.

Ray gave up four runs on four hits and four walks in 4 1/3 innings. "So if I was the manager, I'd do the same thing, like, use all the bullpen because we're going to have an off day tomorrow and day after tomorrow".

Photo Bellinger connecting for a home run in the fifth inning, which helped the Dodgers reach the National League Championship Series. "Unfortunately, it didn't happen". Before the bottles were popped, Dave Roberts had a message for the team "from the beginning of spring training, we said we knew we were the best team in all of baseball, we proved it this series". There were, in fact, many "if onlys" for the Diamondbacks in this series.

Meanwhile, his counterpart, Yu Darvish, was absolutely filthy through the first four innings for the Dodgers. But the four-time all-star went more than a month without a win around the same time the entire team went almost three weeks with just one. "Any time you come to a new organization, there's a lot to think about, about how you should get guys out".

Darvish mixed his fastball with an unhittable slider and gave up just two hits, one run, and struck out seven over five innings.

The Diamondbacks managed just one more hit after Descalso's home run, and some fans headed for the exits at the end of the eighth inning while Dodgers fans chanted "Sweep!"

The Dodgers got one run back against Ray in the bottom of the second inning without the benefit of a hit.
