The favourite Rafael Nadal qualified for the semi-finals of the tournament in Beijing with John Isner, sixth head series, 6-4, 7-6 (0).

Nadal held serve at love in his first three service games against Dimitrov and saved two break points in the seventh game.

The world number one was a 6-3 4-6 6-1 victor as he booked his place in a 110th career final.

"Just something came to my eye, that's all", said Nadal.

"I think I played pretty OK tennis. It was bothering me for a while". "If not, probably I will not have chances tomorrow", Nadal added.

Nadal, who won his third US Open title last month, maintained his momentum in the second set to seal the victory. They even went fishing together, but Nadal said they will have their game faces on for Saturday: "At the end of the day we are competitors".

"I'm very happy to be in the final again", Nadal told the ATP's official website afterwards. "He's a great guy".

Australian Nick Kyrgios sent down 12 aces against qualifier Steve Darcis, winning the first set 6-0 and going 3-0 up in the second before the Belgian retired due to injury.

Elsewhere, top seed Marin Cilic cruised into the Japan Open semi-finals with a 6-2 6-0 win against Ryan Harrison.

In the women's event, world number two Simona Halep of Romania is through to the semi-finals with a 6-2, 6-1 win over unseeded Russian Daria Kasatkina. She needs to reach the final and not lose to third-seeded Elena Svitolina.

The 22-year-old Kyrgios and Nadal will meet for the fifth time, each winning twice in their careers.

There's a reason he's world number one.

The tearful Romanian said she had fulfilled a dream courtesy of her defeat of Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko 6-2, 6-4 and will play France's on-form Caroline Garcia in Sunday's China Open final.
