Kingsman: The Golden Circle

In the name of diplomacy, I respect the decision of anyone who hasn't yet seen The Golden Circle from committing to naming J.B.'s turn in The Secret Service as the very best fit of acting the Kingsman franchise will ever display.

Speaking to guests from the Colombo film and arts scene at the reception, the British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, James Dauris, commented that the film reflects the breadth of talent in Britain's creative industries. For the most part, Elton John truly is Captain Fantastic in The Golden Circle, but there's one particular moment that briefly stopped us from feeling the love tonight.

While we wait for The Golden Circle to put Harry back into the fray - this time on American soil - all well-dressed, badly-behaved duties are handled by his rookie running mate Eggsy (Taron Egerton).

Directed by "Kingsman: The Secret Service's" director Matthew Vaughn, the "Kingsman: The Golden Circle" cast includes Halle Berry as Ginger, Sophie Cookson as Roxy, Pedro Pascal as Agent Whiskey, Jeff Bridges as Agent Champagne, Edward Holcroft as Charlie, Julianne Moore as Poppy, and Elton John as himself.

Unfortunately it seems like the curse of the sequel is upon us, the second movie, titled The Golden Circle isn't as interesting. It also results in the return of Colin Firth as Eggsy's mentor Harry Hart, despite having been shot point blank in the head and left for dead in the first movie. Out of nowhere a drug lord named Poppy (Julianne Moore) decides to eviscerate the entire Kingman team, leaving only Eggsy and his trainer Merlin (Mark Strong) alive.

While the film incessantly jumbles you around to keep you entertained, it feels like more of a grandiose set-up for what's to come, which might just be Tatum in a Kingsman bowler hat. Thus, if we're really picking a victor among the Kingsman cast, it'd no doubt be Jack "J.B".

That first film was fun because Vaughn has a mad gift for action and an utter disregard for tender sensibilities (something already clear in his wonderfully vicious Kick-Ass movies). "So you have to ask the lovely marketing guys because I think their job is to open the movie and don't really care about the experience of the movie". If you want to hang out with your friends, laugh your nose off, and drown yourself in beer, this is the ideal movie for you.

Compared to its predecessor, Kingsman: The Golden Circle is more about quantity than quality.

The references to 1970's vintage Bond movies are many, the one-liners are mostly amusing and - importantly - the occasional mis-steps into outright sadism that marred the first film have been left out this time. He is an entirely different character and easily one of the funniest in the movie. The film follows a secretive spy agency as it tries to save the world from a brutal drug runner with a penchant for turning her enemies into hamburger (disgustingly and literally).
