Stone - who shot a video campaign with the non-profit Child Mind Institute - admitted she still suffers from "anxiety to this day" but 'not panic attacks, knock on wood'.

The film also stars Austin Stowell as Billie Jean's husband, Larry King. And in an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday (19Sep17), the 28-year-old actress, who is now promoting new movie Battle of the Sexes, revealed she began therapy aged seven to help her cope with panic attacks. Trapped in the media glare, King and Riggs were on opposites sides of a binary argument, but off-court each was fighting more personal and complex battles. At 73-years-old, King remains a powerhouse who thankfully now, unlike when she was first playing in the 1970s, can be open about who she is and whom she loves. Her victory and the passage of Title IX, an anti-gender-discrimination law, at that time is today credited with giving a boom to women's sports.

The filmmakers don't just set Battle of the Sexes in 1973, but carefully try to make it look like it was made then; there's a pronounced period aesthetic to Linus Sandgren's photography, so much so that it nearly looks like Haskell Wexler shot it. "But when you get on stage you feel fine".

"Take the lessons you learn on the court off the court", King said on Sunday while promoting the movie.

And, what's more, the filmmakers seem weirdly invested in letting him off the hook.

King herself agreed, and said, "Larry and I always talked about changing the tennis world, from the sixties".

After all, she was just a kid. "So he and I were very much in it together, which really showed how he stayed connected". But it's also a reminder that when they're seeking out screenwriters to tell women's stories, they might ought to consider occasionally hiring a woman to do it.
