A Champions League qualifying win over Hoffenheim across two legs, a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace and a 4-0 dismantling of Arsenal gave rise to early optimism, but the team have not won any of their last three games in all competitions.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will hand Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain a first start for his new club in the Carabao Cup at Leicester now the midfielder is up to speed on what is required from him.

"I would love to but I'm not sure the world is ready for such a insane decision", said Klopp sarcastically when asked if Ward would be involved, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The Englishman suffered a serious knee injury last season and he has not featured for the Reds in the Premier League since the final day of the 2015-16 campaign.

"You are in a situation with your old club - and I don't say this about Alex specifically - and you accept it and it is hard to make the next step".

Only Andrew Robertson was recruited to Klopp's back-line and the former Hull defender only played his second game of the season in Saturday's draw with Burnley.

"Since he's been here it's been hard to train on different things because it's game after game after game".

"We did a lot of good things but not enough". We sit together with him and the analysts to show him how we want him to play in this position or that position.it's worked too but there's no rush.

Klopp dismissed suggestions Oxlade-Chamberlain's development had been stunted at Arsenal. It's really good that he's here.

"But already at the weekend [against Burnley], he came on in a hard situation and he did really well". However, Dejan Lovren, who missed the stalemate with Burnley with a back injury, is likely to miss out.

Another peripheral first-team player in contention to feature for Liverpool is Jon Flanagan. He knew at least all the England players and a few others.
