Rafael Benitez's side earned a hard-fought 2-1 win at home to Stoke City, with Jamal Lascelles, who hit the victor in the victory at Swansea last week, the hero again on Saturday.

Ritchie delivered a delightful cross to allow Christian Atsu to open the scoring at the far post, while his corner was later headed home by Jamaal Lascelles to ensure Newcastle claimed all three points.

Newcastle fans have been taking to Twitter in the aftermath of the win over Stoke, with many reserving special praise for winger Matt Ritchie.

Newcastle took a 19th-minute lead after neither side had come near a sniff of goal.

An unmarked Joselu could well have doubled the advantage against his former side when Chancel Mbemba's delivery dropped in behind Stoke's defence, but the Spaniard awkwardly directed a first-time finish past Jack Butland's left upright. Shaqiri picked up possession and moved ominously towards goal before curling a low shot beyond Rob Elliott from outside the box just before the hour.

Elliot next pushed Mame Biram Diouf's header over the bar, before a recovering Kurt Zouma was deemed to have got a vital touch on the ball when he halted Atsu's progress in the area just as the attacker looked destined to double his tally.

Skipper Jamaal Lascelles powered home a 68th-minute header to help Newcastle edge out Stoke.

After losing their first two games, the Magpies secured their third back-to-back wins in the top flight for the first time since November 2014, and have nine points.

(Owen Humphreys/PA) Atsu may score more spectacular goals, but the one he claimed against Stoke capped a fine team effort.

Lascelles headed United's victor for the second week in a row.
