Since she was a little girl, Mund dreamed about winning the Miss America competition and bringing the highest pageant title to North Dakota for the first time.

When Miss North Dakota, Cara Mund, was crowned Miss America Sunday, she made history.

Prior to the start of the preliminary competition, Cara Mund spoke to the AP and said that she aimed to be North Dakota's first woman elected governor.

New victor of America's most lovely and eligible woman is Miss North Dakota.

While Mund was critical of Trump's stance on climate change, she said she still supported her president.

Mund competed at Miss America under five categories - personal interview, talent, evening gown, life style and fitness, and onstage question. "I do believe it's a bad decision", she said during the Q & A segment of the show.

Miss Missouri Jennifer Davis was named the pageant's first runner-up.

Along with the crown, the new Miss America won a $50,000 (£37000) scholarship, a six-figure salary for the next one year and a contract with Dick Clark Productions.

"Sadly, the 2017 Miss America pageant was like a jazzed-up version of a Nasty Woman March".

Miss North Dakota Cara Mund has been crowned the victor of the Miss America 2018 beauty pageant. "We need to always remember it and honor our history of America, because it truly makes us who we are as Americans, but they should be moved to museums", Schoeffel replied. "So whether you believe it or not, we need to be at that table".

Congratulations to Mund on the big win. Klapperich told Mund, echoing another woman who said the exact same words just minutes before.

'I wasn't really afraid if my opinion wasn't the opinion of my judges, ' she said.

"She's a attractive girl, so happy for you", another told Mund's mother.

Unlike other beauty pageant contestants in recent years - it was a remarkably succinct and informed response. In August, she encouraged her followers on Instagram to "get involved with @makeawishamerica by contacting your local chapter!"

Miss Texas Margana Wood gave a shout-out to her flooded hometown, Houston; she won Wednesday night's swimsuit preliminary.
