It's now free to adopt an animal from the shelter, according to Bowling. Pets will arrive September 16 and the no-kill shelter is also taking donations for food to be sent back down to the south.

"There are dogs of all breeds and sizes who have been in various shelters before the Hurricane Harvey disaster", reads a Facebook post from the group, adding that these shelters are now over capacity due to all the animals displaced by the hurricane.

The Humane Society tells pet owners to include their pets in the safe area of the home where they are sheltering too.

Montgomery-County Animal Shelter and Operation Pets Alive!, of Montgomery County, Texas, joined forces to save the almost 700 pets from potential euthanasia and give them dry places to stay with food, water and required medical attention.

The Mississippi Animal Rescue League got the chance to help some of the animals that were displaced because of Hurricane Harvey.

During severe weather events, there is always a chance that pets will flee in fear or become separated from their owners.

Almost 70 dogs indirectly displaced by the devastating floods in Texas have arrived in the Pittsburgh area looking for loving families.

"One of our primary goals is to make sure all owned pets are able to be reunited with their families and we're thrilled dozens and dozens of reunions have happened already", said Patty Hegwood, incident command for Best Friends Animal Society. Pet lovers in the rest of the country who want to help are encouraged to visit or to adopt a pet from their local shelter to make room for homeless pets being moved out of the hurricane-affected areas.

"The more people do that, the more likely it is that animals will be euthanized - and that's what we're trying to avoid", Staton said.

"We just really just have such a passion for animals, that if they have a need for us to take two or three then we would do that", Wipperman said. She plans to fill up the empty crates from Paws 4 Life with food donations to take back to Louisiana.
