Andrew Luck Activated From PUP List; On Active Roster To Begin Season

Team owner Jim Irsay recently admitted that Luck is unlikely to play Week 1 against the Rams, but there's at least still some hope the star quarterback will be available early in the season.

It's worth noting that the Colts did add some quarterback insurance behind Luck regardless, as the team traded former first round wide receiver Phillip Dorsett to the New England Patriots in exchange for young quarterback Jacoby Brissett.

"I would say, again, the odds are most likely he probably won't open up against the Rams", Irsay said, "but let me be clear about it - in our minds it's something that we haven't ruled out". While it was encouraging that the Colts activated Luck off PUP and to the active roster Saturday, that doesn't indicate when he'll be ready for game action.

That changed just eight days before the start of the regular season. When it comes down to it, the addition of Brissett is for the present and the future.

While Luck now can begin practicing with his teammates, his status for the September 10 opener against the Los Angeles Rams remains very much in doubt. He needed as many snaps as possible.

In 15 games last season, Luck threw for 282.7 yards per game and had 31 touchdowns compared to 13 interceptions.

The Colts can evaluate the 24-year-old Brissett, who has three years remaining on his contract, to see if he's their long-term answer as a backup to Luck after having Matt Hasselbeck and Tolzien, who is in the final year of his contract, for the past four seasons.
