Tottenham and West Ham in battle for Barcelona star Andre Gomes

Tottenham Hotspur are prepared to battle with London rivals West Ham for the signature of Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes.

I understand Manchester United and West Ham United have also both enquired about the 24-year-old, who has also attracted interest from Italy and France. Maybe the loan terms couldn't be worked out, or maybe there was some sticking point in the deal that couldn't be reconciled.

The Portugal worldwide midfielder has been made available by Barcelona on a season-long loan, which has alerted Spurs and the Hammers.

Still, unless we hear conflicting reports from some other source, we should maybe consider this transfer on the shelf for now.

Tottenham stepped up the negotiation with Barcelona on deadline day ahead of securing his services on loan with a view to a permanent move.

But he has suffered a hard time at the Nou Camp and wants to play regular first-team football.

He cost Barcelona a fee of €35m, plus a further €20m in potential add-ons, and his debut came in the Spanish Super Cup against Sevilla.

Gomes has apparently fallen down the pecking order at the Camp Nou, with some suggesting he is not in Ernesto Valverde's plans for the rest of the campaign.

However, they have been put off making a move for him in this window due to a serious injury.
