However that runs counter to a report by ESPN FC that City has not offered Sterling to Arsenal in order to sweeten the deal, and they prefer to make a cash-only move for Sanchez.

Sanchez, who has only one year remaining on his contract and has so far refused to sign an extension, has been a target for City throughout the summer having indicated he would like to work under Guardiola once more.

At least they still have the young-up-and-comer Theo Walcott to fill his boots if/when Sanchez leaves.

But Mirror Sport understands there has now been direct contact between the clubs - and City have made the shock offer involving Sterling.

The success of Manchester City's proposed last-ditch attempt to sign Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez could all depend on whether or not Leicester City complete a move for Andros Townsend.

England winger Sterling signed from Liverpool for £49million in 2015 and has made a strong start to the season with two goals in City's opening three Premier League games.

However he is not guaranteed a starting role at Etihad Stadium following the summer arrival of Bernardo Silva from Monaco.

Sanchez joined Arsenal from Barcelona in 2014 for a fee of around £35m and won his second FA Cup with the Gunners last season.

It remains to be seen whether Arsenal will agree to sell Sanchez before Thursday's 23:00 BST transfer deadline.

The Chilean global made his season debut for Arsenal on Sunday, and he was hardly a factor in the 4-0 demolition the team suffered at the hands of Liverpool. The 28-year-old has just 10 months left on his Gunners deal.
