'I am not happy [with transfer dealings] but for me it is a challenge, ' Benitez told Sky Sports.

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez met the Brazilian in London on Wednesday while he was attending the Premier League launch and he hopes to sign him before Sunday's opener against Tottenham.

"I'm working very hard with the people in the club to try to improve what we have at the moment".

Newcastle would undoubtably still value the Spaniard's experience in both La Liga as well as his limited time in the Premier League as the club step back up to the top flight following promotion from the Championship last season.

'It is important for the fans to understand that this year will be totally different.

Benitez was frustrated to lose out on Tammy Abraham and Willy Caballero earlier in the summer. Hopefully we can find solutions and bring what we need. "Sometimes it's not what you want, it's what you need and what you can afford now".

"It's quite hard for every team, but especially the ones that do not have as much money as the others", he said.

However, there is a worry that this decision only continues Newcastle's struggles in the transfer market.

The Galician club have tabled a €10m bid for the 28-year-old whom they sold to the Gunners for €20m last season but Fenerbahce and Newcastle United are among the other clubs linked to the striker.

Arsenal's Lucas Perez has been the latest name to be linked with a move up North, however reports in Spain suggest he may favour a move to Deportivo La Coruna. "I'm very realistic. Let's be sure we do very well every game and we're out of the bottom three positions and then see where we go".
