United may also face competition from Chelsea for Roberto, as Antonio Conte tries to add depth to his Premier League winning team.

Manchester United have had a £36m bid for Barcelona's Sergi Roberto rejected and Chelsea could soon join the race for the midfielder, according to reports in Spain.

Roberto, a 25-year-old Spanish global who can play as either a midfielder or full-back, has been on the books of Barcelona since joining the club as a youngster in 2006.

Roberto started 39 games in all competitions last season, netting one goal and chipping in with six assists.

Roberto played a midfield role in each preseason friendly and has voiced his desire to make a permanent switch back into the middle of the pitch.

The former Atletico Bilbao boss is most likely to use new recruit Nelson Semedo in the full-back position, and even if Roberto is shifted to his favoured midfield position, he will have to fight with Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets, and Andres Gomes for a place in the starting lineup.

He has since gone on to become an important member of the Blaugrana's first-team, filling in at right-back for long spells last season in the absence of Aleix Vidal.

Barcelona have been scouring for a midfielder throughout the summer and Valverde believes Roberto has the same profile as Paulinho - the player they have been rumoured to be interested in.

With new additions set to arrive at the Camp Nou, courtesy of the funds generated by the sale of Neymar, any club that triggers Roberto's buy-out clause in his contract, a figure of £36 million, could be successful in their quest to acquire the player.
