Colts QB Andrew Luck to Start Training Camp on PUP List

"I love training camp when we are able to go away and our fans can get access to our players that they usually can't get", Ballard said.

Clayton Geathers will open the regular season on PUP which means the veteran safety will miss at least the first six games.

Throughout Luck's rehab, the Colts have been very cautious in committing to a specific timeline for their quarterback's return. It's still unclear when he will be cleared to practice, but general manager Chris Ballard says he is hopeful that Luck will be activated before the September 10 season opener in Los Angeles against the Rams.

Luck had surgery to fix a partially torn labrum in his right shoulder and only began throwing last week. "We did some awesome things and then this year happened obviously and what transpired through this year and sat down after this year and decided that maybe it was time to do surgery on it".

Left unanswered, though, is when will the process the team has strictly adhered to throughout the offseason allow him to actually practice, then play?

DeMarco Murray #29 of the Tennessee Titans catches a pass for a touchdown in front of T.J. Green #32 of the Indianapolis Colts during the first half of a game at Lucas Oil Stadium on November 20, 2016 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

"I don't worry about when he plays and where he plays, " Ballard said. My concern and our concern as an organization is - look, we're all on the same page on this. "We are not going to be rushing him. You don't want to see any setbacks [and] that's why we're following this process so closely and we're doing it with every player". That's what causes setbacks. Butler and Green don't have the tenacity or hitting power that Geathers brings with his hybrid safety/linebacker build, but they should be adequate stopgaps while Geathers heals from his surgery.

Looking for the next update on Luck should come Sunday, when Chuck Pagano meets the media prior to the team's first Training Camp practice.
