Grace stars, Spieth leads at Open

"And Zack came up and said, 'You're in the history books.' And I was like, 'What are you talking about?' So obviously now it makes the day even sweeter".

Grace's record score came one year after Phil Mickelson nearly became the first to shoot 62 until his birdie putt on the 18th at Royal Troon in the first round swirled around the edge of the cup.

Players, such as Mickelson at last year's British Open, have flirted with the magical 62 number, but no one had been able to cross the line.

Following Grace's men's major record round today, Miller did the best he could to take it in stride and compliment Grace's stellar round.

"We knew what the score was, but I had no idea I was about to shoot the lowest round ever. For some reason since hole No. 8 I just start holing everything", Li told reporters.

There have been 31 players to shoot 63 in a major, starting with Johnny Miller during the final round of the 1973 U.S. Open at Oakmont, where he won his first major title.

For 38-year-old Pettersen, the huge crowds lining the course were a novel experience indeed.

"Can't believe in the final round I (made) so many birdies", Li said.

"I honestly had no idea that was something historic", the world No 35 35 told said.

For Li to walk off as the Champion Golfer of the Year, he's going to need help still from the two men ahead of him on the leader board, Jordan Spieth and Matt Kuchar.

It doesn't diminish anything Branden did and it was still a great feat but aerodynamically the ball is so much better than the ball we played with 40, 50 years ago. Tiger Woods had a vicious lip-out in his bid for 62 in the second round of the 2007 PGA Championship at Southern Hills. "I knew I was obviously playing really well, and making the turn in five-under was pretty special", he said.

The Pretoria-born player has previously had four top-five finishes at majors, including a third place at the PGA Championship in 2015.

Despite all his success on the European Tour, Grace had to wait until past year to secure his first PGA Tour title at the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head. "I was so in a zone, and trying to finish the round without a bogey".

On moving day at the Open Championship, a sunny day that NBC's Dan Hicks likened to a "Saturday at Palm Springs", Royal Birkdale was available for the taking. "I'm extremely pleased. I couldn't have asked for much more", said Spieth.
