Mercedes-Benz claims the maximum payload is 1,042kg, ground clearance is 202mm, and these figures are supported by a competitive approach angle of 20.4 degrees. This is the "lifestyle" Power version.

United Kingdom pricing is yet to be announced, and full specifications will be announced closer to the local X-Class arriving on United Kingdom forecourts in November.

In October 2016, the Mercedes-Benz first took the covers off the all-new X class pickup concept.

Five of the top 10 selling vehicles in NZ year-to-date are utes.

"With the X-Class, we will open this segment to new customer groups", Chief Executive Officer Dieter Zetsche said in a statement.

Next year, the X-Class will offer a 255bhp V6 model with four-wheel drive. There's obviously a market for upscale full-size pickups in the U.S., but Mercedes isn't sure if the same is true for mid-sizers. The demand for midsize utes with typical passenger auto characteristics and comfort features has been steadily on the rise for years. At the same time, the number of pickups for private use is increasing. "They are no longer viewed purely as workhorses".

Under the bonnet there will be four and six-cylinder diesels ranging from 161bhp to 188bhp. The top-of-the-line V6 diesel will be available from mid-2018. Here, with an off-road ratio transfer case and differential locks for both axles the company signature 4Matic all-wheel drive system. Wheel sizes range from 17 to 19 inches, depending on specification. The platform has been overhauled to suit the Mercedes-Benz brand and values, though.

Underneath the X Class it's, as we know, based on the Nissan Navara. Here, the X-Class would compete with the Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon, the Toyota Tacoma, the Honda Ridgeline, and the upcoming Ford Ranger. Select markets, like Dubai and Morocco, will get just a 165PS X 200 petrol variant with rear-wheel-drive. The only external hints of the X-Class' Japanese heritage are its identical 3150mm wheelbase, Nissan-sourced door handles and the shape of the side glass and door apertures.

As for the cabin, the design carries over from most Mercedes cars of today, with circular air vents, a large tablet-style multimedia screen for the dash, and a range of luxury-focused trimmings and tones.

Each model will have a slightly different look.

Three equipment levels are offered: Pure, Progressive, and Power.

The rear bumper has an integral step to assist with loading. Widely flared wheel arches, the commanding front and the purist design of the rear all accentuate the impression of width. All three models receive a practical bed with cargo area lighting and 12 volt socket.
