Alia Bhatt excited, nervous for her debut IIFA performance

Katrina Kaif gave away the award to Shahid, while Varun Dhawan announced Alia as the Best Actor - Female at the event, held at the Metlife Stadium here.

Best picture went to Neerja, a thriller based on the true story of a purser who helped save the lives of more than 350 passengers when Libyan-backed hijackers stormed Pan Am Flight 73 in Karachi, Pakistan, in 1986.

Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury walked away with the Best Direction award for "Pink", a hard-hitting drama which put forth the message that when a woman says no, it is a no.

Alia Bhatt's debut in IIFA saw her performing to a medley of hit songs from her movies. The best music director award went to Pritam, the best playback singer male award was given to Amit Mishra for "Bulleya" and Amitabh Bhattacharya won the best lyricist award for "Channa mereya". IIFA 2017 NY, which was held recently, successfully lived up to the expectations and honoured the best of the Indian film fraternity.

Music maestro AR Rahman was honoured with a special award for completing 25 years in the industry.

While the actress was busy making the huge announcement of the Best Actor Award, the cameras panned at Shahid Kapoor, and whoa!

In the film, Shahid Kapoor portrayed the role of Punjabi rockstar, Tommy Singh, who is coping with a drug addiction. Tulsi Kumar and Kanika Kapoor shared the Best Playback Singer (Female) honour for Airlift and Udta Punjab respectively.

Raabta actors Sushant and Kriti performed on retro tracks, while Varun paid a tribute to his father David Dhawan by grooving to his chartbusters.

Filmmaker Karan Johar's Ae Dil Hai Mushkil dominated the music categories.
