By Friday afternoon, the hole stretched up to 250 feet (76 meters) wide and 50 feet (15 meters) deep, and threatened to damage a third home, Guthrie said.

Firefighters actually entered one home to rescue two dogs before the home collapsed. Two homes have been destroyed due to the sinkhole. Within minutes, he said, "the hole opened up" and the boat fell in.

Eleven homes were evacuated, including the two destroyed.

The sinkhole was first reported as a depression around 7:56 a.m. on Friday morning, noted ABC News.

He says it was "frightening" to watch the home disappear into the hole.

Power has been shut off to about 100 homes as a precaution.

He told reporters that geologists from the state Department of Environmental Protection have verified that the current sinkhole is active and progressing, and have asked people to maintain a 200- to 300-foot perimeter.

Authorities say a previous sinkhole had been repaired in this exact location.

"We're expecting it to grow", said Guthrie.

The sinkhole began as a much smaller hole hours earlier. "But again, Mother Nature is going to take what Mother Nature is going to take", he said.

The Red Cross will be assisting evacuated residents who need a place to stay.
