But ill luck struck her down during the third set with a bad injury to her right knee.

"I was screaming at the umpire".

'I looked at it and knew it was dislocated or broken and I just freaked out.

"I remember Sorana talking to me and telling me it's going to be OK and I think that's wonderful". Because I think everyone froze. "Everything is kinda slow after that", she said. I was there on the ground, and it felt forever.

"That's when you heard me drop the F-bomb, but it was that painful - the worst injury I have had in my career". Here, it took a while. "Yes, of course, you start wonder (sic)". I remember my knee just feeling really tight and it didn't look good. To Cristea, that was too long. "I mean, I was there for 10, 15 minutes, then I left and the stretcher was not there yet".

She was treated on court with oxygen and a (presumably) pain injection, before being stretchered out, still screaming "it hurts, it hurts so much" as she was taken away, while stunned onlookers watched.

Mattek-Sands, who won gold at the Rio Olympics in mixed doubles, said that she will need surgery and will take a break from tennis for a period to recover.

Speaking for the first time since the fall, the 32-year-old American vowed to return to tennis and frequently broke out in tears as she gave an update on her injury via a live broadcast on Facebook.

"I will get through this and I will get back out there", she said on Saturday. I'm not a doctor, I'm not a specialist. I don't want to see it again!' "But it wasn't in a normal position".

The All England Club said that a "qualified ambulance technician" was on the scene within a minute, but that did not stop the drama.

French player Kristina Mladenovic claimed the courts have become unsafe because the hot weather has caused large patches of grass to wear away. "The player was then transferred directly to an ambulance and taken under emergency conditions to a hospital".

At present Mattek-Sands is in hospital following her devastating injury, described by medical examiners as "acute".
