A national search for the next Ohio State head coach will begin immediately.

During the 2016-2017 regular season, Akron posted a 24-7 record, including a 14-4 slate in MAC play, which marked the 12th straight season the Zips had won at least 21 games. He finishes with 337 wins, and he made two Final Four appearances with the Buckeyes, in 2007 and 2012.

Matta says it's been the "greatest 13 years of his life".

With a national search now underway, here are three names that could be of interest to the Buckeyes.

"The next person we attract will have a major focus in Ohio", Smith said. Speculation swirled, as it likely meant the end of the Thad Matta era while at Ohio State.

"I think it's the right thing for our program at the right time", Smith said. Mack is 187-91 at Xavier, making him an attractive option for Ohio State. Other possibilities could include coaches throughout OH, including Mick Cronin of Cincinnati and Chris Mack of Xavier. Smith may have delayed his decision until after the spring recruiting season, letting Matta have one more crack at trying to secure a stellar class. Matta even said, "Yeah, probably" when asked if he would still be the coach if he were healthy.

"I've always told people this, the easiest recruiting I ever had here was two guys named Greg Oden and Mike Conley because they didn't want to be recruited".

The school on Saturday said that JaQuan Lyle, the third-leading scorer last season, had quit the team last month. "That's all I am concerned about", Matta said. "And that to me is something I'm going to hang my hat on, that this program was run the right way".
