Qualifying was marred by a frightening crash that sent Sebastien Bourdais to the hospital complaining of pain in his right leg. The 38-year-old underwent successful surgery on Saturday night ay Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital.

Fernando Alonso, two-time Formula One champion, hoped for Bourdais' quick recovery.

Track officials said that he never lost his consciousness while being taken to the hospital in an ambulance.

Carpenter posted the fastest four-lap average at 230.468 miles per hour, and the Indianapolis driver will be shooting for a third Indianapolis 500 pole position, having started up front in 2013 and 2014.
